“Hi, my name is Georgina. I am a teacher living in Kuwait. I am originally from the UK and have lived in Kuwait for just over 5 years. I am passionate about many things in life and foremost- my friends and family.
I was driving to work one morning in January of this year, listening to some music that I listened to when I was at university and I suddenly felt a buzz and happy feeling. Having recently been told that a family member had been given the ‘all clear’ after treatment for cancer, I felt the sudden urge to want to do something ‘good’ for a society and support a cancer charity.
I tried in vain over the next few months to arrange a big event in Kuwait, inviting DJ’s from the UK and Dubai to participate in a fundraising event. I had support from many wonderful people but as venues are few and far between here, it was a fruitless exercise.
That’s right, everyone, it’s that time of the year again! For those who don’t yet know, each year Operation HOPE offers a beautiful, one-of-a-kind quilt handcrafted quilt for Mother’s Day. As always, they will be holding a raffle drawing on Saturday the 27th of April at their Mother’s Day Tea (more info on this event coming soon!). As you can see, this year’s quilt is another work of art! This masterpiece, called “Do You See What I See”was lovingly created by Teresa Al Alban after over 100 hours of cutting, piecing and quilting. “Noor Rahman, a 17-year-old Pakistani girl living with her family in Kuwait, was diagnosed in January 2012 with Leukemia. She underwent chemotherapy sessions, seemed to be getting better, but then she had a relapse in December 2012 and is now admitted to the hospital since 10 January 2013 and needs a bone marrow transplant.
None of her family members were a match for the bone marrow, and in Kuwait and Pakistan they don’t perform bone marrow transplants from non-relative donors. The only hope for Noor is to be treated abroad in Europe or USA with a bone marrow donor which is a very expensive procedure that is also painful and lengthy. The estimated cost of Noor’s treatment is around KD 50,000.
Noor’s family is asking for help. They want to spread the word so that maybe someone kind and generous would extend a helping hand and help Noor. If you can help Noor or know someone who can help Noor, please share this information. A Facebook page has also been created for this cause and you can view it HERE. The French band Sylvain Barou Trio on stage at the Kuwait National Library! A unique show in Kuwait during a Middle East tour: L’Institut Francais Du Koweit starts 2013 with the amazing trio!
As part of the 19th Qurain Cultural Festival, The Institut Francais du Koweit and The National council for Culture, Arts and Literature bring ” The Sylvain Barou Trio” from France. Sylvain Barou is considered one of the best flute players of his generation. Playing mainly celtic music, he has been also strongly influenced by sufi music, from Turkey and Iran in particular. Invited by National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters and the French Institute of Kuwait, Sylvain Barou Trio will perform a show built around an original repertoire combining celtic, jazz and oriental influences. Voice for Success is a not-for-profit program initiated by en.v in collaboration with The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). Its objective is to create greater visibility for outstanding individuals and organizations trying to make a positive contribution to Kuwaiti society. en.v has now launched the ‘Voice for Success’ Online Competition on Facebook, which gives everyone the opportunity to vote for their favorite ‘Voice for Success’ Video and Article. The three activists / organizations who receive the highest number of votes will win fabulous prizes to help promote their causes.
