The National Council of Culture, Arts, and Letters presents Kuwait’s first Pavilion at the 55th International Art Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia. Under the general theme of “The Encyclopedic Palace”, proposed by Massimiliano Gioni director of this edition, the exhibition National Works explores two major works by sculptor Sami Mohammad (b. 1943) along with a new photographic production by Tarek Al-Ghoussein (b. 1962). Curated by Ala Younis, National Works disassembles symbols of grandeur in paused/post glorious times, in an attempt to re-interpret Kuwait’s modernization project.
In the year of its political independence, Kuwait welcomed its new-found prosperity by declaring a willingness to share its future wealth with its neighbors. The time was directed to institutional building in preparation for and accommodation of a growing influx of investments. The country’s urban landscape soon became an open-air museum of national and international performances of construction, creation and political manifestation.
In a metamorphosis similar to that of the country, self-taught artists were engaged in developing state institutions, while the state was providing them with training scholarships and annual stipends. Sculpture was the art form that the Kuwaiti art scene was best known for from the 60s through the 90s. Sami Mohammad is Kuwait’s most prominent sculptor.
The stories and images of Sami Mohammad standing next to a statue of a Sheikh twice his size in a foundry in London are of interesting quality: an illustration of an alternating power between an artwork and its maker, a state and its citizen, a ruler and his subject, a legacy and its receiver; a challenge and its taker.
The artist does not speak of the state of uncertainty and fear of rejection that he went through in the months of making the statues. How he had to confirm with the commissioner the resemblance of a bust made in Kuwait, before transporting it to London to complete the remaining parts and cast it in bronze. On a scaffold, Mohammad climbed to build a gestured body. The same bodies that will bear the wounds of bullets shot at them by the Iraqi army during the invasion in 1990. The artist himself had to escape the pursuit of the same soldiers trying to capture him to make a statue of Saddam Hussein. But the statues speak of a time of nation-building. National works by the state for the people and the people for the state. Works that match the scale of good fortune that has found its way to Kuwait.
For this exhibition, Tarek Al-Ghoussein tracks encounters with grandness in sites significant to Kuwait’s history. This chapter of his K Files, a work in-progress, marks returns to sites of proportion and vastness, with an attempt to consider an individual position within a national body.
The exhibition’s publication explores the emotional and theoretical contexts of works at a time when national identity was not questioned, and when modernist projects, cultural or contractual, were national works.

“Archicamp, the Kuwait-based educational program for students interested in pursuing an education and career in architecture, is back for its second year. The program will take place from June 16 to June 27, 2013 in Kuwait.
Founded by architect Dalal Al Bannay, Archicamp is an intensive educational program in Kuwait designed to educate high school students about the field of architecture – both the academic and the professional side. Al Bannay, who studied architecture at the American University in Washington DC, and has worked at notable firms in Kuwait, noticed that many students who were interested in architecture had very little knowledge about what to expect when they actually enter university, nevertheless the actual workforce. After careful consideration, she decided to launch Archicamp in 2012.
The Archicamp program educates students about the principles of architecture through a series of lectures, workshops, and site field trips. Students will learn sketching/drafting, model making, creative thinking, and problem solving, and will create a portfolio for their college applications.
This year’s program includes classes and seminars, fully supplied with materials and computer resources. Students will also embark on field trips, and have the opportunity to interact with architects and design professionals. This year’s lecturers are:
- Dalal Al-Bannay – Architect and Founder of Archicamp
- Alia Al-Ghunaim and Ghanem Shehab – Architects and founders of Optimus Designs
- Barrak Al-Babtain – Architect and founder of albabtain|design
- Jassim Al-Saddah – Architect and founder of bab.nimnim
- Jassim Al-Shehab – Head Architect of ARCHjs
- Samer Mohammad — Architect at Multitude Agency
- Sara Al-Fraih – TA at Kuwait University’s School of Architecture
- Waleed Shaalan – SSHi Design Principal, Founder and Managing Partner of BrainStorm; a multi-disciplinary design firm
- Ali Al-Yousifi – A third year student in Kuwait University’s architecture program
- Ahmed Talal Al-Houli – An student at Kuwait University’s architecture program.
At the end of the program, the students will present their final projects at a professional presentation, exhibit all their works and enjoy a reception for the students’ families and friends.”

The film follows Muhammad’s first years as a prophet starting with Islam’s beginnings in Mecca in which the Muslims are persecuted, the exodus to Medina, & ending with the Muslims’ triumphant return to Mecca. A number of crucial events, such as the battle of Badr & the battle of Uhud are depicted, & the majority of the story is told from the point-of-view of peripheral individuals such as Hamzaibn` Abd Al-Muttalib (Muhammad’s Uncle), Abu Sufyan (the leader of Mecca) & his wife Hind bint Utbah (enemies of Islam who later become Muslims themselves) Movie Duration: 180 minutes approx. Popcorn & soft drinks will be provided.

You’ll be excited to know that Napket launched its Jazz Night yesterday at their Avenues branch and while it was just a soft launch by invitation, it will soon become a regular Wednesday night event. The snob setting made of black velvet chairs, black wooden tables, chandeliers and dim lights coordinates perfectly with the Jazz City Band performance. The live music lasted about two hours and a half and created a fantastic mood for a new dining experience. So if you’re looking for a an entertaining evening out with good food and you like jamming to jazz, Wednesdays at Napket is where you need to be!”

The Extreme Weekly Bike Rides have resumed as the weather has cooled down a bit. The bike rides are held every Friday morning at 5:00 a.m. sharp (if theres a dust storm the rides are sometimes cancelled). The rides are from Shuwaikh to the Gulf Road.
